Fifth Semester

Course Objective: The course objective is to focus upon the critical thinking faculties of the students concerning academic, linguistic, social, literary and ethical concepts and enable students to hone English language skills for the professional world.


Course Description

'English in Action' has been designed with an objective to make all youngsters learn good English for success in their professional and personal lives.  The focus will be upon four categories: Prose, Poetry, Vocabulary, and Grammar.  In addition to these the last unit focuses upon developing the writing skills of students by including review writing. The course has been designed keeping in view the real life and contextual aspects of language and literature. Apart from the usual literary and language components, the course has  a unit  on Gender Sensitization with a view to impart gender equality among students. Linguistic outcomes  coupled with language outcomes that the course strives for, it also makes attempt to inculcate a value system that is the need of the hour.


UNIT -I

Poem: Ecology by A.K.Ramanujan, Prose: What’s the Language of the Future? by Henry Hitchings, Vocabulary: Indianisms Grammar: Framing Questions


UNIT- II

Prose Poem: Girl by Jamaica Kincaid Prose: Gender equality is your issue too by Emma Watson, Vocabulary: Analogy and Odd Word Out, Grammar: Verbs


UNIT – III

Writing Reviews: Film Review, Book Review, Vocabulary: Technical vocabulary, Grammar: Conditionals

 

Course Outcomes

CO 1. Read and interpret and analyze the implicit and explicit layers of meaning embedded in a poem.

CO 2. Identify poetic devices and the uncommon use of language in poetry.

CO 3. Realize the need for protecting the environment and value traditional lifestyle

CO 4. Understand the need for Gender Equality through feminists writing

CO 5. To study the reasons for 'English Fever' in the present and the challenges that the language is likely to face in the near future.

CO 6.  To learn varieties in English Language including Indianisms.

CO 7. Learn and use, technical  Vocabulary (Film and Literature)

CO 8.  Improve language skills by learning how to frame questions, use verbs and conditionals.
