Department of English , Osmania University has designed the curriculum of General English to be taught to the students of under-graduation in affiliated colleges keeping in view the Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing needs of students, particularly in the real life situations. The incorporation of four genres aims at facilitating students to get themselves engaged in contextual language learning besides familiarizing them with social, cultural and historical aspects of the state of Telangana. The recommended texts and the structuring of the language learning tasks that follow the text in each unit are designed in a manner that enable the student to acquire adequate knowledge about the finer aspects of language and gain proficiency, if practiced sincerely. Further, the learner-centric approach and the remedial language learning method will ensure the acquisition of language competence by the students to the desired level. The inclusion of grammar, vocabulary and composition components is expected to help students hone their skills in speaking and writing.

CO I. Read, interpret and analyze the implicit and explicit layers of meaning embedded in a poem.

CO II. Identify poetic devices and the usage of unfamiliar language structure in poetry.

CO III. Become more empathetic and question the various forms of discrimination that exist in society based upon caste, race, gender and culture etc.

CO IV. Engage themselves in enlightenment values (liberty, equality and fraternity) and the idea of the secular nation versus a nation composite of various groups divided on the basis of region, caste, creed and language.

CO V. Understand the need for the English to be adapted to the local cultural contexts of India.

CO VI. Develop interest in questioning the purpose of existence of art, whether it exists to serve some purpose or is it just for delight and enjoyment.

CO VII. Learn and use synonyms and antonyms, phrasal verbs, idioms, technical and media vocabulary, and the differences between the British and American variations of the English language.

CO VIII. Improve language skills by learning about prepositions, connectives, concord, reported speech and voice( active and passive).

CO IX. Develop better writing skills and become adept in organizing one’s thoughts and ideas into essays.

CO X. Enhance their report writing skills to use in official contexts.
