Course Description:
The course 'American Literature' provides a comprehensive exploration of the literary and historical landscapes of the United States from its early discovery to the 20th century. Through five structured units, students analyse how major historical events and shifting literary movements shaped a distinct American identity. The syllabus covers classic poetry by figures like Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson, alongside iconic fiction including Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Additionally, students engage with powerful dramatic works by Lorraine Hansberry and Arthur Miller that challenge societal norms, and deeply moving prose speeches by Sagoyewhatha and Martin Luther King Jr. that highlight the struggles for civil rights and indigenous voices.
